"Breakfast nonsense, microwave, fridge & pets"
3 of 5 stars Reviewed Jul 30, 2014

I'm staying at this Birmingham La Quinta as I write this, and I felt compelled to respond to the guests who were dismayed by the lack of a fridge and microwave in their room. This property has rooms with and without. Microwave and fridge are about $5 more per night. We have a microwave and fridge in our spacious, tastefully decorated room.?? For those who don't know, La Quinta has essentially two tiers of properties; those that are older and not as nice with minimal breakfast (approx $60-70 per night) and nicer properties with hot breakfast that includes sausage and eggs, etc. (approx $90-120.) This property appears to lie somewhere in-between; it is very nice physically but has only the basic breakfast (with just one waffle maker).?? UPDATE: I had to expand this review due to the silly breakfast scene at this La Quinta. Unlike other LQs, which have a person dedicated to running the breakfast operation, this LQ has just one desk person to do it all! Morning breakfast and check-out time is probably the busiest time at any hotel/motel, but the poor desk clerk at this LQ must handle both the breakfast and the front desk duties simultaneously, with the consequence that neither is done well: guests wait at the front desk while the clerk tends to the breakfast, and the breakfast area keeps running out of various foods and condiments while the clerk attends to front desk duties. To make matters worse, there is no direct connection between the desk and the rather sizable breakfast area; the clerk has to run about half a block (slight exaggeration) to get from one to the other. The butter bins were empty, the syrup container empty, the yogurt gone, and the trash containers were overflowing, although this poor woman was scurrying back and forth as rapidly as possible doing her best to handle both operations while maintaining a positive attitude. (She must be a saint.) The owners obviously spent a lot of money upgrading this property only to deliver a lousy guest experience to their customers every morning. It?s just silly. I?m sure every guest at this LQ would be willing to pay a dollar more on the room rate to have a decent breakfast and check-out operation at what is otherwise a very nice property. The owner and manager were nowhere to be seen, so maybe they don't have a clue about what is actually happening at this hotel. If they would like to learn how it can be done right, they could contact the cordial manager at the LQ in Roswell, New Mexico and Deborah, the breakfast attendant there. By the way, in my opinion, the upper-tier LQ properties are as nice as you'll find at more expensive chains like Hilton Garden Inns, but with the added benefits of the included breakfast and pet-friendliness, with no added fees for pets, no long lists of pet regulations, and no threats of big fines for pet infractions that are common at other ?pet-friendly? properties such as Best Western.

"Perfect Stop after Long Day on Road"
5 of 5 stars Reviewed Jul 27, 2014

We did not spend much time in this hotel. We spent a very long day on the road and were just looking for a comfortable, clean place to lay our heads. The mattresses were wonderful. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was very large and clean. The breakfast was fine. I would definitely stop here again if passing through.

"Not bad"
2 of 5 stars Reviewed Jul 26, 2014

I've stayed here many times but in my most recent visit I was extremely unhappy. I asked for a king smoking and ended up in a double room. The full beds were very uncomfortable to share for two adults. My boyfriend and I ended up sleeping in two different beds. I kept asking about another room and they said they only had one king that was smoking and some woman and they gave me her name has been staying there for awhile now. I was quite uneasy how comfortable they were giving out customer information. Any time I asked for a manager, they had just stepped out or had an emergency. I hate to say but I doubt I will be returning which sucks cause it was really wonderful at one time.

"Not great, not terrible"
3 of 5 stars Reviewed Jul 25, 2014
A La Quinta traveler |
Stayed here for one night. First room we were given the a/c didn't work. Hallway also was hot and humid and smelled of cigarettes. Next room the door wouldn't shut without using the deadlock, which was a chore in itself to get into place. A/C in this room was fine. Beds were stiff and uncomfortable.

"Get there early to park"
3 of 5 stars Reviewed Jul 25, 2014
Bigfoot3910 | Orange, TX
We stopped in for a night on our way home and found the parking lot almost full. The night desk clerk was awesome but I forgot to write down his name. The woman working the desk the next morning seemed much more interested in talking on the phone than checking us out. They don't slide your receipt under the door like most LQ's I stay at. The room was great and had plenty of electrical outlets for a welcome change. Room was clean for the most part other than what appeared to be a spot of blood under the sink - on the apron of the vanity. Luckily my wife didn't see it - and it was way too late for me to care much. Breakfast was ...adequate, but nothing special. Waffles were the only hot food option and you had to stand in line to make one. We would probably look at other options next time, but would be willing to stay here again depending on what we found.
