"Nice pet friendly"
3 of 5 stars Reviewed Aug 16, 2014

I want to focus on the positives about this place since there was really only one negative. The staff was friendly at check in. Seemed like the staff at breakfast did a good job trying to keep everything stocked in spite of many hungry guests. Our room was clean and good for a three star hotel. We had a comfortable stay. Parking was ample and safe. We needed a pet friendly hotel and they are hard to come by on the island. Our dog was comfortable and although I saw other dogs around, I never heard any barking from the rooms. The whole hotel was very quiet even though it was full. There were lots of families and small kids. Never heard a peep. Slept great, the bed was comfortable. I would probably stay here again if I had to bring my dog with me. The only negative was a musty, moldy smell on the third floor where our room was. I could smell it in our room but mainly in the hallway. I have experienced this moldy smell before at another, more expensive hotel in Galveston. I also agree with another review that some things could use to be updated on the property. The carpet in the hallways is one of those things. I liked the location because it is quieter out on that end of the island, but if you want to be in the thick of things and be able to walk across the street to the beach, this may not be the best for you. There is only the tiniest amount of exposed sand at low tide here. A plus might be the fishing pier a short walk down the seawall.

The hotel is mediocre. Inside is nice, but the outside needs work including the pool area. One of the cleaning staff members was very rude and when I reported it to the manager, although she apologized, she didn't offer to make up for it in any way. Breakfast was good. Lots of noise in the middle of the night. Won't be staying there again.

"Lesson learned"
1 of 5 stars Reviewed Aug 12, 2014

We should have know the stay would not go smooth when we arrived at exactly 4 PM after traveling most of the day with two young boys and our room was not ready because a two queen bed type room was not a priority. We waited until 4:30 when finally a front desk employee went and tracked down housekeeping. We finally went to our room only to find the microwave and refrigerator were not clean and the safe was locked. The maintenance employee came up and cleaned the microwave and refrigerator and unlocked the safe. The AC worked great and the beds were very comfortable. The tub stopper was broken and never got repaired but could be used. We were told that if we wanted a TV listing we had to come to the front desk. From our experience rooms normally have the TV listing in the room on arrival. A lamp shade was missing and was still missing when we left 4 days later. We asked for an extra pillow the second night and the Assistant General Manager said we could not get one until the next day but would give us an extra comforter. My wife and grandsons went to the pool at 3 PM on the third day and got locked in between the hotel security door and pool entry gate because the maintenance employee failed to unlock the pool gate in the AM hours. They had to knock of guests windows, so a guest could get them out the locked area. When I asked the front desk employee about the problem, the employee did not know which key to use. Additional guests were trapped just as was my wife and grandsons. Guests walked around through the hotel to let the trapped guests back into the hotel, so they could walk out the front door and around to the pool. On our last day, the cleaning staff left our room OPEN, not just unlocked. We found it on our return in the afternoon and luckily did not have anything missing. The same day the cleaning staff failed to clean the tub. Breakfast was still another problem. The hotel management only had one person working to provide breakfast to hundreds of people. Guests had to constantly ask for food to be refilled. The gravy was brought out cold and guests had to warm up their breakfast in the ONE microwave that was available. Guests were provided either frozen type scrambled egg omelets or hard-boiled eggs. The hotel rooms do not face the each. As we were told, the rooms are at a 45 degree slant. The General Manager did call us on the last day, but was not overly concerned except to apologize and say that it was the busiest time of the year. If I had read other past reviews from the past 3 months, I would have booked a room in a different hotel. Lesson learned. All La Quinta Inns are not created equal. I am waiting on La Quinta Corporate Headquarters to get back to me about their problems.

The check in clerk was very confused on how to check me in using cash instead of a credit card or debit card. It took forever to check into room. The following day I wanted to stay another night because I needed more time in Galveston, Texas due to meetings. She again had all sorts of trouble with me paying cash.

"Horrible Hotel"
2 of 5 stars Reviewed Aug 9, 2014

We paid extra for a balcony view and then we weren't given one. Then we stayed on the third floor and the air conditioner didn't cool the room. We asked to switch rooms, but the hotel was at maximum occupancy. They sent the maintenance man up and all he said was that this was one of the newer models so it should be working (it wasn't). The maintenance man went to get an additional screen for the air conditioner and then never came back. We had a horrible experience and won't stay at La Quinta anymore.
