I found this place to be a nice step up from some of the other choices. It was clean and attractive, both in the public areas and in the room. The digital thermostat made it easy to set the room to a comfortable temperature. The king size bed was also comfortable. Breakfast was not quite as nice as I was hoping for, but was certainly adequate.
Everything here was fine - large room with comfortable king bed. Large FSTV, good desk, refrig, microwave, all the normal but all basic. Lobby, halls, room decor, all really basic but adequate. Motel would be best for families because of pool, sauna, and hot tub. Breakfast was just OK.
Stayed here on trip from Texas to Seattle. Room sufficient but could use updating. Lots of noise above us from running jumping child. Called desk to see if we could move. Desk staff was rude and refused saying we had been in the room so couldn't be moved. I am a professional corporate trainer who has trained hotel and resort staff in service recovery. Believe me, her attitude and response is unacceptable. Would never return here. We paid for rest and were willing to move. Unless you want to tolerate noise and rude staff do not stay here.
I stayed here last year with my kids who wanted to go swimming, the rooms were great. But we noticed later they had ants around the tv. I did mention to this to the desk up front but all I was told was "Are you sure you didn't bring them in your bag?!!!" I asked for a manager but of course none was available at the time and was told to come back later or call the number on the card. So from my experience I just say double check your room first before you decide to call it a night. So next time we will be staying down the road and checking before settling in.
A winter time trip (southern route using I-40) from Southern California to Colorado begs a stop in either Albuquerque or Gallup, depending on your stamina, the quality of your audiobooks or the number of kids and animals you're hauling. Since the only redeeming quality of the City of Gallup is that it is 2 hours closer to California, we are often required to stay there for one night. We are La Quinta Returns members so we booked this property on both the outbound and return legs (two nights in two different rooms). The hotel is sandwiched between I-40 and the railroad tracks carrying massive amounts of coal and freight across the country. In other words, you simply must avoid being on the rail side of the hotel. Say so when booking your room. The trains run 24/7. The I-40 traffic noise subsides in the wee hours and is the choice to make. There is a Denny's next door, a full service gas station and Subway next to that. A couple other cheap motels are adjacent to these which means summer traffic creates real pressure on these few services. Park near the front door because security in this area is low. There are many panderers, mostly drunks and not aggressive. Still, it speaks to the security issue. Once through the front door, bags in hand, you might stand in line a while. There were two people behind the desk when I arrived at 4 pm but only one was doing check ins. The other was "supervising". Training is nice but not when multiple guests are lined up. We were assigned cell 115, an aging dark cavern at the very end of the first floor hall (facing the railroad tracks) arranged and decorated by someone with a wild sense of humor. For example, the TV has been bolted to the topside of the chest of drawers - three inches in front of the large wall mirror. A terrific idea if in an emergency you need the serial number on the back of the TV. The same creative concepts are applied to the other furnishings and lighting in the room. The bath is standard size and unremarkable - no major troubles. A locked pass through door connects 115 to the room next to it where the staff had parked a very large dog that barked. We had no dog or kids to fight back. At 4 am on departure day the hair dryer from the doggie room got us up. That's how bad the sound proofing is. I'm not against the sounds of real life but unless you are enamored by the clickety clack of rail cars, the thunder of locomotives, the sharp woofs of overweight dogs, or the jet engine whines of hair dryers in the middle of the night, shop for some other room or some other hotel. There is no report on the food. When the warden gets you up at 4 you are too early for breakfast or coffee. The gas station in the complex is open all night though and we got a decent cup of coffee to go from there. Just a note: we shared these misadventures with the front desk before going to Denny's. They couldn't wouldn't move us and said it was our fault because we did not specify the following items on our internet booking:
1. Want room on I-40 side of building, not railroad side of building
2. Want room on floor with no dogs or room away from dogs
3. Want room with lights and furniture that work
(This is advice to the reader. They consider it your fault if you do not know to ask.)
That's about it. My advice is simply this, "Don't stop in Gallup, New Mexico. If you have to, don't stay at La Quinta. If you have to, tell them everything noted above.
