"Very Good Newer Property"
Reviewed Nov 30, 2013
This LQ was on the upper end of what I've come to expect from the chain - probably because it seemed like a newer property. Rooms were comfortable, clean, and (for the most part) well-maintained. Our only problem was a ventilation fan in the bathroom that absolutely roared. When I mentioned this upon checkout, the 20-something clerk remarked that they hear that regularly (I got the impression that he had no particular intention to refer the matter to maintenance). Speaking of that clerk, management may wish to counsel him that the grunge look is best left for the Curt Cobain tribute concerts - - not a airport hotel property. As always, we were delighted that our dog was as welcome as we were!
Room was OK. The staff acted like they couldn't care less if you stayed their or not. With the inflated room price and the great advertised breakfast, you would have thought they would try to be somewhat accommodating. We "attempted" breakfast halfway through their allotted time. There was hardly any food available. Our choice was a few Little Debbie miniature powdered doughnuts or some cereal. Our other final option was the waffle maker....which to no surprise, was empty of batter. We asked an employee in the lobby that was responsible for the food area if he could get us some batter. He went over to the machine and attempted to get some batter. A few drops came out...maybe enough for 1/2 of a waffle. ( there were 5 of us wanting a waffles ) He said when it completely runs out...let him know and walked away. No one at the check-in counter offered any assistance either when asked. Would not stay there again....even if for free.
Stayed two nights while in town for the USC vs. Notre Dame football game. The rooms are nice and clean (recently renovated), with comfy beds, a good deal of space, strong wifi and the basic amenities. I had no real problems with the staff (they were attentive most of the time, and doing their jobs for the most part). You get what you pay for here. Breakfast was simple (cereal, pastries, bagels, etc.). It's a great location, away from the hustle and bustle of game day (if that's what you're interested in). Airport is literally 100 yards away if you're flying in. I will stay here again on my next trip to South Bend.
Got in around 8PM. Parking lot lights were off. Was greeted by a sign on the counter stating that the front desk clerk was gone and to use the white phone on the wall to contact the staff for any questions. As in checking in. As I was standing at the front counter, I noticed a young lady, maybe 22, got up from talking to another young lady and came over to check me in. She had no name tag on, so I asked her name. She introduced herself as "Lucky". I asked Lucky about the security lights. She said they were on, and I told her that they were not on. She did not know that the only lights on were the portico lights. I and the maintenance man went outside to verify the security lights were indeed off. Although I am only speculating that he worked there, since he did not have a name tag nor any identifiable logos on his shirt. He went in and turned the security lights on. It took Lucky twice to enter my information for a room, which I guess isn't a huge deal except the only info to enter was my name and credit card info. I'm guessing Lucky's mind was elsewhere. Since her friend was there, I'm not sure if she had enough time to walk outside and take a look at the security lights and provide a safer, lit area for the hotels guests. Next morning, I was checked out by a different person (no name tag) after I called him on the white phone that hung on the wall and asked him to return to the front desk. Again, greeted by the sign. Bottom line. The property itself is well kept. Rooms are comfortable and clearly updated. Which has a nice appeal. However the staff, in my opinion lacks professionalism. To be greeted by the sign instead of the front desk clerk easily puts the stay in prospective. As evidenced by the Help Wanted plea on the outside signboard. I read the earlier reviews and I know how jaded reviews can be. I had a pet with me, which is my I stayed here. But for my money, I will go down the road another half mile and stay somewhere else next time. Don't know about breakfast, didn't stay long enough to find out.
Could not have asked for a better room, nicer people, faster wifi, location... pet friendly, could extend my check out a few hours with zero problems... will definitely stay here each time I return to South Bend, IN!
