"It sure smelled clean"

The main problems with this stay were the odors. In the hallways there was an overpowering smell of cleaning fluid of some kind. It's good to smell clean, but anything can be overdone. The only way to avoid the smell was to go inside the room, which, in this case, smelled really musty. The bed was comfy, plenty of pillows, the shower was great, the breakfast was not crowded the next morning, but the smells were over the top.

"Nice hotel, small rooms"
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2013

The hotel is only a year old and is beautifully decorated. Large breakfast area with a counter for folks with laptops. Laundry room in addition to pool and fitness room. The bathroom had a large shower stall which I loved but the water pressure was pretty light. Once you put a king sized bed in the room there was barely room to walk around and no place to put suitcases. Traveling with a lab, we really noticed the tight quarters. Flip side, if you are traveling with a dog, there is a decent sized area to walk. Prices are commensurate with a new hotel. Much nicer than others we've stayed at in Marshall.

"Poor First Impression"
2 of 5 stars Reviewed Apr 29, 2013
tltalbert | Waco, Texas
The La Quinta Inn and Suites, Marshall, TX has been highly rated by the majority of the reviewers. It was these reviews that raised my expectations for this property. Unfortunately the La Quinta in Marshall, TX underperformed in all areas and left me with a poor first impression. While I'll give them a second chance I can attest that they have many mistakes to address before I can review them favorably. Room: The room is reasonably well-appointed with only a few visible indications of a need for more attention to be given to the cleanliness of the living area carpet and bathroom areas. The size of the room is noticeably smaller than another hotel property in Marshall that I?ve recently reviewed (HIEH&S @ 500 I-20 East). Although the room offered two queen beds that were comfortable it was apparent that the size of the beds was not appropriate for the dimensions of the room. The desk and chair that was provided in the room was crowded by one of the beds and did not offer adequate space for working or lounging. One favorable amenity that should be noted is the LQI&S did offer Dish TV (satellite) with a large television. Both were welcome additions as compared to the typical limited television service that is offered by many hotels. The wireless Internet service seemed to be relatively fast although not always reliable during our stay. Overall I would rate the room quality and comfort as average at best with low marks offered for the size of the room. Public Areas: The dining and public lounging/lobby area at the LQI&S offered some comfortable seating although the location of the chairs near the entrance doorway did not encourage a person to spend an extended period of time gathering with friends and family for conversation. The dining area was somewhat comfortable with a mixture of booths and chairs with dining tables. The space of the dining area was more accommodating for gathering with friends and family than the lounging area referenced earlier. The most disappointing public area was the indoor swimming pool. Unfortunately we were unable to use the facilities because the presence of human vomit next to the swimming pool was left for an extended period of time. When this information was brought to the attention of the front desk attendant the problem was not immediately addressed and the vomit was left for over 45 minutes. When the human waste was finally cleaned there was still the presence of the waste?s smell in the pool facility area. Obviously this situation made the use of the swimming pool and the lounging areas inside the facility unusable. The fitness facility was small and provided limited fitness equipment. Although the machines that were provided were in good working order the size and poorly ventilated fitness room did not facilitate or encourage one to use the equipment for an extended period of time. La Quinta?s public areas (including the pool) were quite inferior as compared to the previously referenced and reviewed property (HIEH&S @ 500 I-20 East). Complimentary Breakfast: The breakfast offered at this property was typical and adequate at best. The quality of the food was average to poor with your standard ?make-it-yourself? waffle stations. Included in the breakfast was biscuits, gravy, and microwave sausage patties. A limited variety of bagels, sliced bread, and pastries was offered. The condiments such as crème cheese, butter, jelly, salt and pepper were not well-stocked and in some cases not replenished once the containers were empty. In regards to the crème cheese, the use of a single large container of crème cheese for all guests is unsanitary and exposes all guests to cross contamination. The quality of the breakfast at the LQ was by all comparisons low quality as compared to a previously referenced and reviewed hotel property in Marshall, TX (HIEH&S @ 500 I-20 East). Staff: The front desk and dining service staff at the LQ, Marshall, TX were all pleasant although not as responsive as necessary for addressing aforementioned sanitary issues (pool and breakfast). In regards to billing errors I am still awaiting a resolution to a problem that should have been handled by the property management and not referred to corporate. Hopefully a follow-up review regarding the failure to resolve the billing error will not be necessary. Overall: The La Quinta Inn and Suites, Marshall, TX certainly failed to meet the high expectations that I had based upon reviews from other travelers. I will certainly give the LQ another chance to impress me and by all means hope that they will be able to address several of the issues raised in this review. I would prefer to offer this property the same rave reviews that other travelers have posted and if the management and staff are able to address and resolve many of the issues raised I will be quick to write a favorable review. However, should my next stay at the LQ once again disappoint I always know that I can return to the aforementioned referenced and reviewed property (HIEH&S @ 500 I-20 East) on future visits to Marshall, TX (I visit once a month).

"Excellent Weekend"
5 of 5 stars Reviewed Apr 20, 2013

This is the only review I have ever submitted about a hotel, but I felt like I should express my thanks for an excellent experience. I stayed in a room with a jet-bath that was large enough to stretch out in, and very nice after two days hiking at Caddo Lake State Park. The entire room and bathroom were top-notch and the room was quiet even with the hotel being on a busy road. I had my dog with me, and there was enough grassy area for us to have short walks, so she was also happy.

"Mostly Good, But finish cleaning the bathroom next time"
4 of 5 stars Reviewed Mar 29, 2013

Newer hotel, about 1 yr old when I stayed here. Nicer overall first impression than other La Quintas, with a comfortable lobby lounge. Check in was easy and friendly. Room spacious, high ceiling, nice decor. It looked clean and neat until I noticed a notepad with scribbles on it from the previous guest. And, in the shower, there was a used bar of soap balancing on the water control. When I called the front desk they offered to re-clean the room. The bathroom looked better the second time around. The bed linens were nice and the mattress comfortable. At breakfast the next morning the food was picked over even though there was another 45 minutes left for serving time. Nobody was there to fill and refresh items. Overall a pleasant stay with a few exceptions.
