Every year we drive from Arizona to Idaho at least two times. We have realized that Ely is by far the best location to break up the trip in two parts since it's basically half way. Our problem has been to find a clean and nice place to stay comfortably. A few years ago we noticed that La Quinta had opened a new hotel in Ely and it looked tempting, may be not the location but.
We tried a few times to make a reservation but it was always sold out... we also noticed it was far more expensive that other overnight options Ely offered. In one way that was good news.
A few weeks ago we made the trip again and managed to get a reservation at La Quinta Ely. We asked for a room on the first floor close to the reception area since I have a hard time to walk because of medical conditions. That was confirmed by La Quinta.
We called La Quinta approximately 2 hours before arrival to confirm and finally we arrived at about 6:15 pm. Expectations were high.
The sole person in the reception was on the phone and asked us to wait... and we waited, and we waited. After 15 minutes she was done with her phone conversation and a long line of check-ins had built up behind us. She did not excuse herself and started the check in process.
Suddenly she looked up and said that we had requested a room on the first floor. I said "yes we have, because..." Unfortunately we can't do that since you are checking in late.
I asked if 6:15 pm was considered late and pointed out that we had such a room confirmed.
She gave us the key to a room on the second floor... as far away from the elevator you can get.
We had a wonderful view of the Ely Supermarket, parking lot.
That was our first experience of La Quinta Ely and for that we paid almost twice as much as we are used to pay in Ely.
Next day we checked out very early and I thought about asking for an early check-out discount but my wife reminded me that there was no time for jokes.
Conclusion: Don't take confirmations for granted
Granted there are few lodging choices in Ely, NV and if we went there again we would probably stay at this property because the alternatives are worse. However, in our opinion, the service and accommodations were not up to La Quinta standards and we stay at a lot of La Qunitas.
When we attempted to check in at 2:30 PM we were told our room wasn't ready yet. That's fine, the advertised check in is 3:00 PM. We were invited to wait in the lobby. We left and came back shortly after 3:00 PM and our room still wasn't ready, even though they knew we were waiting. When asked if check in was at 3 the excuses started. Busy night (in Ely?), many groups, low on staff, people not checking out until noon (stated check out time), etc. We waited awhile longer (no one else in the lobby or checking in) and were finally offered a room in the "annex".
We've never seen a La Quinta like this. A detached building across the parking lot, two story, with no elevator. The room was acceptable and for the most part quiet, until the high school girls volleyball team arrived. This is was not the hotel's fault.
At the end of the day we believe our issues with check in were related to the fact that we used rewards points to book a lower rate for the room. When asked if we were moved down the check in or cleaning priority list because or our reduced rate, the manager got very defensive and argumentative. Can't say for sure but with other staff turning away and disengaging it sure seemed like this was the case.
Maybe it was just the "annex" or maybe it's just Ely but this facility should not advertise high speed Internet. They probably shouldn't advertise Internet at all. It should not take 10 minutes to send an email (not counting log in time). We had multiple devices (computer, tablets, and phones) and they all experienced the same problem. The Internet access in this facility is horrible to non-existent, Don't plan on getting any work done at this facility. The good news is, there is a McDonalds just down the street.
In addition, we contacted La Quinta Customer Service and asked that a review/questionnaire that we get for most stays be sent to use. To date it has not arrive via email or mail.
We really feel that La Quinta proper should audit this facility. Even though Ely is in the middle of no where, this facility is tarnishing the La Quinta brand.
After driving Hi 50 we were tired and a little stressed. We walked into the La Quinta Ely lobby to be greeted by a happy, smiling desk clerk who brightened our day. The room was lovely, delicious breakfast and we were ready for next days drive. The place to stay in Ely, NV
La Quinta Hotels are very clean. The rooms are spacious and the atmosphere is relaxing. I especially enjoy the complimentary breakfast in the mornings. There are a variety of foods and of excellent quality, a great was to start a day.
Hotel offers quiet and clean rooms and a great breakfast. It is located on the outskirts of Ely, but has easy driving to the downtown casinos and restaurants. We slept in late and enjoyed relaxing until we were ready to head out on the road again.
