"La Quinta, Ft. Pierce vs. DoubleTree, West Palm Beach"
Reviewed May 24, 2013

For business travel, I usually stay at La Quintas. On this trip, I chose the La Q in Ft. Pierce, but Trip Advisor reviews of the La Q in West Palm Beach weren't encouraging so I booked the DoubleTree Inn near the airport. This is a Hilton property that usually goes for $100+ a night, but the website offered me a $75 rate if I paid at time of booking with no cancellations possible. I didn't like the idea of being manipulated in the way airlines are famous for, but I was lured by the Hilton name and made the booking.
Both buildings are modern, 5 story monsters with pool, exercise room, nice lobbies and spacious rooms. AC controls are on the wall, both had bar fridges, La Q had a microwave, DoubleTree had a small safe. You can't reheat a doggy bag in a safe but I guess it's good if you're traveling with the family jewels.
My king bed at the Fort Pierce La Q was hard with no pillow top, and the pillows were cheap, unyielding foam. The first night I did not get a good sleep. The next night I pulled the bedding back, shoved the comforter under the sheet and it was better. The DoubleTree pillows were a synthetic down and very comfortable, and the bed was firm but had a removable pillow top pad (take heed La Q) and provided a nice sleep.
Although the included breakfast at La Q is mostly sugary crap, you can usually find raisin bran, yogurt and a piece of fresh fruit. The DoubleTree did not include breakfast. Instead they handed me a cookie at check in. There is a restaurant on premises, which is a good thing because there isn't much else in the immediate vicinity, but at $14 for bacon and eggs, I had to pass. How difficult would it be for them to throw in a bowl of cereal and an apple?
The air conditioner made lots of noise in the first DoubleTree room so they moved me to a room that had the exact same noises. La Q ac was quiet. Bathrooms are much bigger at the La Q although the shower was little more than an energetic drizzle. On my final morning at the DoubleTree, there was no hot water and I had to leave without a shower. I might expect this at a Super 8 but Hilton?
TVs and HD channels were comparable, furnishings were similar but the La Q had a much larger desk which suits the kind of work I do, and their Internet was wired and incredibly fast. DoubleTree's Internet was annoying because I had to sign in with last name and room number every day.
Service was courteous at both hotels, but I had a hard time getting an elevator at 8:15 one morning at the DoubleTree Because chambermaids had commandeered them. When one finally came, I had to run the gauntlet of cleaning wagons to squeeze past them to the door.
In the end, I was surprised at how well the La Q stood up to the DoubleTree, exceeding it in most categories (now go out and buy the pillow top pads and decent pillows), and at an average of $10 less a night, even with DoubleTree's deep discount.
The staff of this hotel is great! The only downside is the use of tempor pedic mattresses instead of pillow top as in the other LaQ hotels that I stay at. The tempor pedic are HARD and not nearly as comfortable as pillow top. However the staff provided some extra mattress padding for me. This helped. Don't get me wrong....the mattresses will NOT prevent me from staying here again!
Recently stayed at this Hotel. Extremely clean. Appears to be a newer hotel. Grounds were in excellent condition. Hotel staff for the most part were very good. Rooms were very clean updated. Dining area is very nice. Only problem found with hotel was that the dining area was not well staked with sugar, in fact there was none for coffee. Location is set back from highway which made it very quiet here. Would not hesitate to return to this hotel if back in the area.
This laQuinta was one of the nicer ones I have stayed out. Very clean and the staff was very helpful. Breakfast was good and had different items each day. Surprising quiet for as nany dogs that were there. Would recomend anyone with dogs to stay here.
Such a nice place to stop along the road. Wonderful rooms, very friendly employees, especially the one at the front counter the night we arrived. Needed a place to eat, and she recommended a very nice restaurant. Great to have breakfast before we left the next morning. Highly recommend this place.
