"Can be very good - shame to see current state"

I have stayed here on a number of occasions in 2012,13. The pricing and location were very good. A Decent room, breakfast and parking with a good internet connection worked well for me. You can walk into Central Austin - it is a decent/long walk and there are a number of good restaurants locally . It appears that things have slipped and they need to have a look at what is going on re service, cleanliness etc. On a good day, it is very good.
I've stayed here maybe a half dozen times over the past 6 years, last wrote a review on it on July 1, 2012. Rated it great, because it was... then. It's one of La Quinta's corporate owned hotels, and they always operate those with much higher standards than the franchise-operated hotels. Even their older ones, as this is.
It's just hard to understand how they could have let this one slip so badly. The basics were very OK (bed, bedding, cleanliness, TV, air conditioner) but...
-The pool and the area around it obviously hadn't been cleaned in a looong time. Bird poop LITERALLY covered all the chairs and chaise loungers and the concrete apron around the pool. Look at the pics I've posted. There was a 6" ring of green algae on the pool wall all the way around. See pic. Does no one in management or maintenance EVER walk by the pool? When I tried bringing the pool needs to staff's attention, there seemed to be no interest. One even said "I haven't seen it, and I can't do anything, I never go out there."
-The exterior entry door to the front wing corridor has a prominent sign posted that the door is locked 24 hours and required key entry... but it was always unlocked. Management and maintenance had to frequently use the door. Great security.
-Our room carpet, an ungrade King Executive Suite, was badly stained.
-Our toilet, with minimal use, plugged twice.
-The breakfast area was very small and crowded, and had only three small tables. Folks were sitting on lobby benches awaiting a turn. Choices were very minimal.
Have been members of La Quinta's Rewards program for years, have stayed in hundreds of them all across the US and Canada. I've seen worse, which were almost always a franchise, but have never seen one of their corporate locations operated as badly as this one.
If you are looking for a slummy motel in the south Austin area, then this is your place!!
The rooms are moldy smelling, they will try to put you in a room that has beds that are not even set up properly, there are BED BUGS and transients. There were also locals who came to help themselves to some fine used mattresses from the back of the motel, not to mention the drunks who hang out and pass through occasionally stopping to relieve themselves outside of guest windows. Oh, I hate to leave out the fine guest who hang outside of their rooms along the balconies drinking beer and smoking. What a fine establishment....in need of a bulldozer!
The bathroom needed to be cleaner with better working water. overall room was clean and smelled clean. It had a decent pool area and the lobby was nice. It was quick access to highways and to downtown.
We always stay here when we go to Austin to party. This place is close to downtown and always does a good job of taking care of our needs. Most recently, we left our car lights on and had a dead battery. Eli went out of his way to get jumper cables for us and charge us up. We will continue to stay here.
