"Did not like this La Quinta"

This hotel was very outdated! The rooms were not very clean and smelled like cigarette smoke even though they are non smoking. Some of the staff was friendly, some didn't seem to care if we voiced concerns. The only good thing I can say is that, there is a Denny's, Wendy's, and Taco Bell right next door to this hotel. We were not at all impressed, we would not stay there again.
The clerk who checked us in was friendly and prompt. I called a few hours before we arrived asking if it would be possible to get a roll-away as we had had a child unexpectedly joining us for part of our stay and had reserved a king room. The clerk arranged for it and had it ready in our room when we checked in. Our keys did not work at first, but she admitted it was her mistake and quickly replaced them, The room was a handicapped accessible room, which we needed, and was clean and spacious with a hand-held shower head in the bath. It was a step-in bath, which was a problem, but the shower head and provided shower chair made it possible to work around it. I bleach-wiped the shower chair and laid a towel on it (just in case), but it appeared clean and was a pleasant surprise. We were pleased to find that the room chair was a recliner. The disabled parking spaces were right outside the door, although I noticed a pick-up parked in one of the two spaces (I was in the other one) and a person with a disabled plate was parked on the other side. My husband complained on their behalf and was told that the city police would not enforce the law since it was private property. I suspect they just didn't want to make a guest mad, even if that guest was a thoughtless jerk with no regard for others who could have parked 3 spaces over perfectly legally and apparently doesn't understand that it can be very difficult to maneuver a wheelchair or walker out of a vehicle in a regular parking space. It was late when we arrived and we had an early morning appointment, so we grabbed some dinner, went to bed, and left early. As a result, it wasn't until the second night that we realized that both the telephone and TV were not working. Both were repaired the next day, but thank goodness for cell phones! The same clerk was working and provided us with compensation for our inconvenience through La Quinta's rewards club. The hotel is directly adjacent to a Denny's, Wendy's, and Taco Bell, with other inexpensive restaurants nearby. Overall, I'm sure we will stay there again since we have a child attending a nearby university, but it would be really nice to see some paint and new paving in the parking lot. It's looking rather shabby.
On June 22nd we arrived about 6:00 p.m. with confirmed reservation. There were three people behind the front desk laughing and enjoying one another's company and almost ignoring our presence. The leader of this group became extremely hostile in dealing with our presence. (This person has been terminated.) We were assigned a "smoking" room with such a strong odor that it drifted outside when the door was opened. A kind employee (a housekeeper) found a non-smoking room for us. On our return trip (July 15th) home there was no difficulty checking in. However, the "hot" water never became very hot, and it took long minutes to reach our faucets. The room was barely adequate. For many summers we have made this LaQuinta our stop between Houston and Colorado ... going and coming. These last two stays are our last. Staying at this facility is a crap shoot, and we no longer will pay for poor quality. We wish it were not this way.
We've stayed at this location twice on this road trip mainly because we like to stay at La Quinta as much as we can because they are all pet friendly. This one is rather old, you'll park outside of your room, but the staff is super friendly. And, if you're going to avail yourself of the LEGENDARY Big Texan Restaurant, they have a FREE limo to take you there. It's clean and easy to get to. It's far enough away from the road so that it is not noisy, but DON'T get an upstairs room if you're old or infirm (we're both 65+), because they don't have an elevator. They do honor discounts, though --- so if you're looking for a low-priced stay that is clean and easily accessible, this place is a good bet.
We choose the La Quinta East to be closer to the Big Texas Restaurant. The place is rather tired and dated. It definitely could use an update. We staying in the back of the motel which was rather was rather a long way from the front lobby. It was quiet and provided a good place to walk our small dog. The breakfast was just the usual and nothing to write home about. I think we will be trying the other La Quinta in Amarillo the next time we pass through.
