"home away from home"

A La Quinta traveler |
Always clean rooms, friendly staff and good food. They have seen me through..marriges, funerals, birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and just lots of visits with family. This is my home away from home when in Austin!
It works. I wasn't in the room except to sleep and it was great for that. It's a basic 'need a place to stay in a hurry' kind of thing. I didn't use any of the amenities, but they did have a workout room and a pool.
Hotel was clean and quiet. Elevator was out but I was on second floor and not a big deal. Originally reserved room with two double beds but they really are too small for 4 people. I asked for a King room with sleeper sofa and they changed my reservation. Also brought me a cot to accommodate all of us. Great service from front desk.
I'm a frequent La Quinta customer and registered member. My wife and I choose La Quinta as our go to hotel, as it allows dogs but still maintains a quality hotel. Unfortunately, in this case we did not feel the hotel was dog friendly. For years, we've been staying at La Quinta's without incident. Staying at this hotel we were called twice indicating our dogs were barking. Seems fair enough, but unusual. Both times I returned to the hotel to hear minimal periodic barking (I always test the dogs by sitting outside the room for a couple minutes after a leave and before I enter the room). Although, I did ask guests and they did indicate dogs were barking but couldn't seem to pinpoint where. The floor had at least two other barking dogs on it.
I make an assertive effort to analyze all perspectives. However, my case is simple.
One, this is a dog friendly hotel. Dogs will bark when their owners are away. As long as it is reasonable, not continuous or extremely loud. People slamming doors or talking near by will trigger a dog to bark. Dog friendly hotels should realize that.
Two, these incidents occurred at 3pm and 6pm. Staff and guests of the hotel should expect noise. Its not as if the dogs were barking at 11pm or 6am. Frankly, every single hotel stay we encounter more noise from humans late at night and early morning than any animal.
Third, the first call was by the day manager, we talked to her directly the next day and she said she is the one that heard the dogs barking and called. Apparently, she makes hall rounds in the afternoon and took a proactive approach in calling us, which I think is a mistake. If guests aren't complaining, there shouldn't be a complaint report.
I know for a fact that at least two other owners were called for the same issue, as I was near by the front desk when the calls occurred. So, my suggestion to dog owners, avoid this hotel if possible. If your dogs bark, you will be called.
To be fair, the hotel was nice. A great location to Barton Springs, shopping, and downtown. Great outdoor space for walking dogs. The staff was friendly. And the breakfast was good.
The staff was very nice, friendly and helpful, and the location is good for access to fun Austin (Downtown and South Congress) with a car. BUT.... the rooms are in need of repairs. Many things were poorly made, cheap or in need of repair. For example, shower curtain falling off, or light fixture broken. For a newer motel, it seems to be in disrepair. For the money (not cheap to stay), there are better options in Austin.
